Sam MIGHT be coming to terms with the idea of being a big brother

For months now, whenever anyone has asked Sam if we're going to have a baby soon, if he's going to be a brother, or have a sister, etc, he has replied with a sheepish "noooo!" It has been pretty funny at times, particularly when we ask him if there is a baby in mommy's tummy--he tends to look at us like we've lost our minds when we say that, which is understandable, considering what a weird concept that must be for a three-year-old to get his head around. A few weeks ago we did make some progress in that he acknowledged that if there was a baby, it could stay with Ms. Emma (his daycare provider).

Now that we've finally been able to start getting baby gear out and set up though, I think reality is hitting and Sam finally gets it, that this baby is a real thing. I set up the bassinet the other day and he commented immediately that it was "for the baby." Now that the baby has her own room, with a crib and clothes in it, everything seems to be coming together for him. Or, it's coming together as much as it can, for a kid his age. I'm sure he'll still be a bit weirded out when his sister does arrive, though I'm hoping it won't be too traumatic.

Right now, Sam is pushing his toy vacuum around the living room and making vacuum sounds while his dad runs the big vacuum. If only the toy vacuum actually worked, we'd never have to get the big one out! Sam was even using the toy upholstery brush attachment on the couch, pretending to suck up the dog hair.

Conversation:
Liz: Are you going to have a new baby sister?
Sam: She's coming!
Liz: Is she coming soon?
Sam: Yep.
Liz: Are you going to be a good big brother?
Sam: Nope.

  4. I love the name of the blog, how did you come up with such a clever name? I'm showing Pat the picture of Sammy with his helmet and bike as soon as he gets home. I hope the baby gets here soon, just try and avoid Wednesdays for my sake. I'm sure I am your first priority here, right? I'm glad you are starting to take it easy--finally! Remember to call me as soon as you get so much as a twinge of a contraction and I'll try not to bug you with too many phone calls to check on any potential labor pains.
