40 Week OB Appointment

I had my 40 week OB appointment this morning and unfortunately, have nothing conclusive to report. The doctor thinks there may have been slight progress, but didn't have the heart to poke and prod me to be sure.

I did talk to the doctor about when we'd want to go for an induction, if it comes down to it. The practice I'm at will allow me to have an induction if I hit 41 weeks, which is next Thursday, and 42 weeks is the longest they'll let me go. Chris and I have talked and we think that if I don't go into labor next week, we'll probably schedule the induction for Monday, 1/26. I know this is a bit of a wait for everyone, but as I've mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of pitocin and don't want to underestimate the risk of a failed induction. Anyhow, this isn't set in stone, but I do know that the earliest I would agree to go for an induction is next Friday.

In the meantime, Chris and I are going to try just about everything* we can to jump-start labor. I'm even considering subjecting myself to the mall this weekend, just to have somewhere to go walking.

In other news, Sammy is still feeling under the weather. He still has a fever and woke up in the night with a bad cough. I listened to him on the monitor for a while, trying to figure out if he was coughing in his sleep. When I finally went down to check on him, he was sitting up in bed, coughing and wide awake. I'm really surprised he didn't call for us. In any event, I brought him up to bed with us, gave him some Tylenol, and eventually the coughing settled down enough for him to fall asleep. This morning he has had some bursts of playful energy, but then will turn around and get all glassy-eyed and sad-looking. Here's hoping that this illness runs its course quickly!

*I think I'll have to be really desperate to try the castor oil route. My mother tried it when waiting for me to arrive (I was THREE weeks late!) and it was not only very unpleasant in more ways than one, but also did not work.

  1. Well it sort of worked. I had contractions enough to be admitted to the hospital, but everything then stopped. They made me stay overnight for observation. Twenty four hours later, labor started for real.
