Ongoing Baby Arrival Superstitions

As my due date has come and gone, I have become increasingly superstitious in regards to the baby's arrival. In particular, I keep feeling like the baby is going to choose to come at whatever time would be most difficult in a given week. For instance, over the past 2 weeks, I have thought the baby would come:
  • Right as bad weather was approaching.
  • When Sam got sick.
  • When I got sick.
  • On a Monday or Tuesday, which would be the worst days for my sister to come in from Chicago due to classes she teaches/attends on Wednesdays.
  • The day I had a dentist appointment scheduled.
  • On inauguration day--don't want to miss the excitement!

The longer I go past my due date though, the less I care about these types of obstacles. I do hope the baby arrives on a day that my sister can come in to town easily, but we can work it out. Now, really, the only thing I'm concerned about is missing the Lost season premiere. Is that completely ridiculous of me at this point? Probably. But damn, I love that show! Mom and Dad, please, please, please make sure that you've got Lost programmed to record on your DVR tomorrow, okay?

I suppose, if I'm in labor, I might still be able to watch, so long as I'm not too far along. I'm sure the nursing staff and my doula will wonder about my priorities, but whatever, it's LOST!

On a related note, I do have other superstitions that are tied to the baby's arrival. These are mainly things that a totally irrational part of my brain thinks need to happen before the baby will arrive. They include :

  • Finishing the bedroom closet (done!)
  • Finishing the baby's room (done!)
  • Hemming some yoga pants for Mom (trying--fabric is giving me trouble)
  • Making sure things are set with our pediatrician (done!)
  • Painting the trim and doors for the bedrooms, bathroom, coat closet and linen closet (partly done... have lost momentum--is this why I haven't had the baby!?!?)
  • Etc.

I know, I know, totally irrational and at odds with my first list, in that one is a list of times the baby could come that would be totally inconvenient, and the second is a list of things to do to make the baby's arrival more convenient. Blame it on the waiting. It's making me a bit batty.

I just have to keep telling myself that the baby will arrive all in good time. In the meantime, my two remaining superstitions are as follows: the baby will come during the Lost premiere, but only after I manage to finally win a game of Mah Jong on the computer. I'm on a major losing streak!
